What is a beard transplant?

Beard transplants are exactly what the name implies. Namely hair transplanted from another part of the body, in the facial hair area. Usually the donor hair for beard implantation (as with a hair transplant ) comes from the back of the patient’s head or from under the chin if there is visible growth there.

This process requires an experienced hair transplant surgeon. The grafts are permanently attached to the face at an appropriate angle. The surgeon makes sure that the new graft is properly aligned to create a natural result.

How is beard transplant performed

How does a beard transplant work?

A beard hair transplant is performed under local anaesthetic. The grafts (from the determined donor area) are removed by means of the FUE method. This means that the grafts are removed one by one with a hollow drill or a hollow needle. The grafts are then implanted one by one to the bald spots of the beard.

In the first 1 to 3 weeks after the hair transplant, the hairs fall out. This is completely normal. After the hair has fallen out, it will grow back over time. Usually the first hair growth starts after about 3 to 4 months. The result is optimal after 9 to 12 months.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE hair transplantation is the most commonly performed option for beard transplantation. The surgeon harvests the donor hairs (complete hair follicle/hair follicle structures) one by one from the donor area.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT involves the surgeon cutting a strip of tissue with multiple hair follicles from the donor site. The donor hairs are removed from the strip of skin and implanted into the beard.

Note: the FUT method is an outdated method.

FUE is considered the most superior method as it leaves only tiny tiny white circular scars. while the FUT method leaves a large scar on the donor area. The FUE beard transplant technique is also significantly less painful than the FUT method.
